Murchison Falls National Park.
This park is the largest protected area with 3,840 km2. Murchison falls National park lies at the core of the greater Murchison falls conservation Area, which also embraces the Bugungu and Karuma wildlife reserves and the Budongo forest. The park is named from the falls which are now referred to as Murchison but before were referred to as Kabarega falls. However whatever one elects to call the falls, Murchison falls-the wide, languid Nile being transformed into an explosive froth of thunderous white water as it funnels through a narrow cleft in the Rift Escarpment- is easily the most impressive sight of its type in East Africa. With altitudes of 619m o 1,292m, Murchison falls National Park is low lying by Ugandan standards, and of those parts of the country that are regularly visited by tourists, it is the only one that regularly becomes stiflingly hot. The park has an average annual rainfall of 1,085mm.
In total 76 mammals species have been recorded. Primates such as , bushbuck, Defassa waterbucks, Uganda kobs, oribi, warthogs, are present . Also present in the plains but less frequently observed are leopard spotted hyena and the localised patas monkey. Chimpanzees are also common in the Rabongo forest.
The bird checklist of 460 confirmed and 19 unconfirmed species is headed desirability by the shoebill, most common along the stretch of river between Nile Safari Camp and the estuary into Lake Albert. May other water-associated birds are prolific along the river, while raptors make a strong showing on the checklist with 53 species recorded.
