Kibale Forest National Park Tour Information.

Together with the nearby Kasenda Crater Lakes, Kibale Forest National Park are close to being an independent traveller’s dream, blessed with tantalising combination of inexpensive accommodation, easy access, wonderful scenery and a remarkable variety of activities. The park is highly alluring to nature lovers of all budgets for its excellent chimpanzee tracking and birdwatching, not to mention the greatest variety and concentration of primates of any forest in East Africa. The dominant vegetation is rainforest, interspersed with patches of grassland and swamp and with a floral composition transitional to typical eastern Afro-montane and western Lowland forest.

The park is composed of about 60 mammal species and it is particularly rich in primates with 13 species recorded, the highest total for any Ugandan national park. The Kibale forest area is the last Ugandan stronghold of the red colobus. Diurnal primates include, chimpanzee, grey-cheeked Mangabey, Olive baboons, vervet, red-tailed, L’Hoest’s and blue monkeys. Kibale forest offers exceptional primate viewing, but it is not otherwise an easy place to see large mammals-this despite an impressive checklist which includes leopards, elephants, leopards, buffalo, hippos, warthogs and many more.

335 bird species have been recorded in Kibale with 4 species not recorded in any other national park; Cassin’s Spinetail, Nahan’s francolin, sitatunga and Peter’s red and blue duikers. The best bird watching spot in the park is Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, where a four –hour trail has been laid out, and experienced guides will be able to show you several localised species which you might otherwise overlook.

Getting there and away.

Kibale Forest National park is most approached from Fort Portal using the Kamwenge road. If you are driving from Fort Portal town centre, follow Lugard Road north for about 1km. Immediately before the bridge across Mpanga River, turn right. You know you are on the right road when after about 500 m you pass a hospital to your right. About 12km out of Fort Portal, you reach a major junction, where you need to fork left and then proceed for 20 km to reach Bigodi.
